ArcelorMittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal, based in the UK, has emerged as a significant player in India's political financing scene. Recent revelations about Electoral Bonds shed light on Mittal's substantial contribution.
Mittal, with a net worth exceeding USD 16 billion, reportedly purchased Electoral Bonds amounting to Rs 35 crore. This contribution alone constitutes over 9 percent of the total sum donated by individual donors.
Additionally, Mittal's company, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), has been actively involved in significant projects in India. The joint venture secured a contract worth Rs 1,600 crore from the Gujarat state government. Moreover, an MoU was signed in 2024, further solidifying their presence in Gujarat.
Further expanding its footprint, ArcelorMittal initiated a project with Greenko to enhance solar and wind energy capacity by 975 MW in Andhra Pradesh, a deal valued at USD 0.6 billion.
Lakshmi Mittal, ranked 108th on Forbes' list of the world's wealthiest individuals, continues to play a notable role in India's business and political landscape.
